People know that at its core, Christianity has something good to offer the
human race. At any age, most of us long for a place to learn and appreciate the
depth of Christianity with teachers who have a special gift for imparting the
essence of our faith to others. There are many unanswerable questions that
need to be asked, and for those in the 7th and 8th grade, coming to realize
that those questions are reasonable and warranted is part of why we offer the
confirmation experience. Yes, we are educating our youth to the messages of
Christ! What we all learn along the way it that asking, pondering and
wondering why we are here is normal and natural for all of us. Confirmation
offers youth a time for asking those questions while feeling supported and
guided in our quest for a better place to walk into the mystery of God.
Here at Shawnee UMC, we do confirmation with middle school students from
the beginning of February through May each year - a rather short, but
concentrated process which includes Sunday morning classes as well as field
trips, outreach projects and a retreat. Each student has an adult mentor and
we don't just talk about worship, mission, fellowship and evangelism - we DO
all those things as well. For more information, call Rev. Leslie VanBlarcom at
