Membership – How do you become a member of Shawnee

At Shawnee UMC, we’re grooming people to become disciples by connecting people in a growing, engaged, active relationship with Jesus Christ.

How Membership begins

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Shawnee United Methodist Church, you may indicate your desire on the attendance pads or contact the Pastor. There are several ways you can join Shawnee United Methodist Church whether you’re coming into your relationship with Christ for the first time, or you’ve belonged to another church before. You may join in the following ways.

If you’re just beginning your faith journey and are professing your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior for the first time, you may join in this way. Following a profession of faith a time will be scheduled for you to receive the Sacrament of Baptism to affirm your membership in the Church of Jesus Christ, confirming Shawnee United Methodist as the place you will serve as a disciple.

If you have been a member of Shawnee United Methodist Church or another church at one time, but have been inactive for 2 years or more, you may unite by renewing your commitment to practice faithful discipleship as a member of the body of Christ. A consultation with the Pastor is all it takes to restore your membership in the Church.

If you are a member of another church, you may join by requesting a transfer of your membership to the Shawnee United Methodist Church. Our staff will make sure all of the necessary paperwork is done to effect the transfer.

As a part of our denominational membership care, if you are a member of another United Methodist Church in another city, but will be residing in this area, you may unite with the Shawnee United Methodist Church as an affiliate member. This allows you to keep your membership in your home church, but will place you under the pastoral care of Shawnee United Methodist Church.

Are you a member of another Christian Denomination and a church in another city and want to be a part of Shawnee’s congregation but don’t want to change membership? You might consider the following.

As a part of caring for other Christians from another denominational walk of faith, if you are a member of another Christian Denomination in another city, but will be residing in this area you may become an associate member. You will maintain membership in your home church, but be under the pastoral care of Shawnee’s pastor and staff.

  • Confirmation

Confirmation Classes are provided for young people who have reached the age of 12 but have not become a member of the church by stating their belief in God and Christ as Savior. The Director of Student and Young Adult Ministries leads the children through an extensive journey of faith for several weeks, all leading up to Confirmation Sunday. On that day, those young people who have come to the point of professing their faith in Christ will be presented to the congregation as new members of the Church.

If any youth have been confirmed in another church, they will simply be invited to participate in our church’s United Methodists Youth Fellowship (UMYF).

Let's hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, because the one who made the promises is reliable. Let's also think about how to motivate each other to show love and to do good works. Don't stop meeting together with other believers, which some people have gotten into the habit of doing. Instead, encourage each other, especially as you see the day drawing near. (Hebrews 11:23-25)

Encouraged by this Scripture, we have four expectations of you as you journey toward discipleship by becoming a member of Shawnee United Methodist Church.

  • We expect you to grow in Christ through regular attendance in worship, and study in one of our many Christian education venues.
  • We expect you to engage in ministry through service in the life of the congregation.
  • We expect you to engage in an active relationship with Jesus Christ through daily prayer and devotion, and some form of Christian service outside of the church. We are who we are in Christ inside and outside of the church.
  • We expect you to become a mature disciple of Jesus Christ in your giving. Tithing (giving 10% of you income) is the biblical standard. If you can’t tithe initially, we expect that as you mature in Christ it will be a vital part of your faith practice.
