In order to encourage the development and sustaining a "singing church," we sing as part of many Christian education and fellowship events for all ages. The plans for meetings, classes and workshops often include music. We believe it is especially important to involve all children and youth in singing and other music.

Nancy Hegge is the Music Coordinator and also Director of Children's Music. Brenda Loscher-Hudson is the accompanist for the elementary Sunday School singing groups. Please call Nancy for more information, 677-3014.

Rainbow Singers:
The Sunday School hour is a traditional time for singing with children. Our kindergarten, first and second graders form the Rainbow Singers. They meet every Sunday morning in the Chapel at the beginning of Sunday School for ten minutes of singing. From October to May, they sing for morning worship (10:45 only) on the second Sunday of the month. Postcards are sent to the families to remind them of these special Sunday mornings.

Other Children's Singing:
The third through sixth graders come together at the end of the Sunday School hour for group singing in the chapel. Each and every spring, all preschool and elementary classes prepare and sing for the Easter Call to Worship, planned by the Children's Council.

Other opportunities for children's singing include the annual Children's Christmas Pageant, which is presented the second Sunday afternoon of Advent, and Vacation Bible School, which is in July.

Youth Singing:
SUMC Youth (grades 7-12) enjoy group singing during UMY meetings and present special music during the youth-led services. High school singers are invited to sing with the Chancel Choir and are encouraged to prepare solos or sing in ensembles for other worship services and church events.

Spirit Styx and "Fish" Styx:
The groups are open to elementary and youth participants in grades 2-8; adults are welcome to join us, too. The Spirit Styx rehearse on Mondays from 5:00-5:45 PM and the “Fish” Styx rehearse on Wednesdays from 5:15-5:45 PM, September through May. This is a new exciting music ministry based on rhythm and tone bar instruments, plus movement and singing of multi-cultural Christian music. The director is Renee Antonio.
