United Methodists realize that service goes hand-in-hand
with our spirituality.
We invite you to participate in any of our mission
projects throughout the year.
Cancer Service Group:
From August through June this group meets every fourth Wednesday of the month at
12:30 p.m. in Room 307 (the exception being November-December when there is one
meeting on the first Wednesday of December). Working for Cancer Action of Kansas
City, Kansas, the group makes bed pads, pillows, head scarves and afghans for
cancer patients. Supplies are provided. Visitors are welcome.
Round-Up For Hunger:
Each year the Kansas East Conference collects food, health kits, money and
clothing through local churches who bring it all to Lawrence, Kansas on the
third Saturday in November to be totaled and then distributed to appropriate
agencies through the State of Kansas.
Christmas In October:
Shawnee United Methodist Church has a history of sending a team to participate
in this greater Kansas City effort of area businesses, agencies and churches to
spend the second Saturday in October doing home repair, reconstruction, and clean-up for
Kansas City residents without the means to do so.
IHN - Interfaith
Hospitality Network:
IHN is an ecumenical organization
providing shelter for homeless families in Johnson County, which began
operation in the summer of 2004. Shawnee UMC provides one week of shelter
for up to 14 persons in our church annex 4 times a year. The annex is
staffed by volunteers who feed and host families from 5:00 pm to 7:00 am
from Sunday to Sunday. Call to volunteer for the next rotation!
FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC MISSION:
Every year, several persons from our congregation
take advantage of opportunities to go on Kansas East Conference mission
trips. Common destinations are Mexico and Guatemala. In early 2006, a team
from our congregation will go for a week to provide relief for victims of
Hurricane Katrina.
